What the Crypto Fear & Greed Index tells you
A 0 to 100 score of market mood. How it is calculated, how to read it and why it is not a buy or sell signal on its own.
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, published by Alternative.me, sums up the mood of the crypto market in one number from 0 to 100.
- 0–24: Extreme Fear
- 25–44: Fear
- 45–55: Neutral
- 56–75: Greed
- 76–100: Extreme Greed
What goes into it
The score mixes several signals, mostly about Bitcoin: price volatility, trading volume and momentum, social media activity, Bitcoin's share of the total market, and search trends.
How people read it
The idea comes from an old saying: be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful. Periods of extreme fear have often been near local lows, and extreme greed has often come before pullbacks.
Its limits
The index describes the mood; it doesn't predict the price. It can stay in Extreme Fear or Extreme Greed for weeks while the price keeps moving the same way. Use it as context next to your own plan, not as a trigger to buy or sell.
