How to read the heatmap
- What is a liquidation?
- When a leveraged trade loses almost all its margin, the exchange closes it by force. A long is sold, a short is bought back. When many sit at the same price, reaching it can set off a fast chain of forced orders.
- How is this estimated?
- Exchanges don't publish where positions would be liquidated, so we model it. Each period's trading volume opens new positions, split across 5×, 10×, 25×, 50× and 100× leverage, half long and half short. A level disappears once the price reaches it, fades as traders close positions, and the total is scaled to the coin's real open interest.
- How do traders use it?
- Bright bands often act like magnets: price tends to move towards big clusters, then reverse once they are cleared. Many traders avoid placing stop losses right inside a cluster. It is an estimate, not a forecast, so use it with funding rates and the liquidation calculator.
