What is a dividend?

A dividend is a share of a company's profit paid to its shareholders, usually in cash.

Many mature companies pay them every three months, while many fast-growing companies pay none and reinvest instead. A company can cut or stop its dividend at any time. An unusually high dividend yield can be a warning sign that investors expect a cut.
