What is an interest rate?

An interest rate is the price of borrowing money, or what you earn for saving it, shown as a percentage per year.

Central banks set a key rate that influences what banks charge. Higher rates tend to slow borrowing and spending, which can reduce inflation, while lower rates tend to encourage them. That is why markets watch central bank meetings so closely.
