What is market cap?

Market cap is the total value of a company or coin: its price multiplied by the number of shares or coins.

It is a better measure of size than price alone. A $5 share can belong to a far bigger company than a $500 share if it has many more shares. The same is true for coins, which is why a coin priced at a few cents is not automatically cheap.

Example

A coin priced at $2 with 1 billion coins in circulation has a market cap of $2 billion.
