What are making charges on gold jewellery?

Making charges are what a jeweller adds for the work of turning gold into jewellery.

They are charged as a percentage of the gold's value or as a fixed amount per gram, and detailed designs cost more. Some shops also add wastage, which covers gold lost during production.

When you sell jewellery back, you usually get only the value of the gold, so making charges are generally money you do not get back.

Example

With 80,000 of gold and a 10% making charge, you pay 8,000 for making, before any tax.
