What is sterling silver?

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, usually mixed with copper to make it stronger.

It is often stamped 925. Pure silver, stamped 999, is too soft for most jewellery. Since sterling silver contains less silver, its metal value per gram is about 7% lower than pure silver.
