What is a stock market index?
An index is a single number that tracks the prices of a group of stocks.
When the news says the market is up, it usually means an index rose. You cannot buy an index directly, but many funds aim to copy one. Well-known examples are the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq in the US, and the Nifty 50 in India.
