Oil and fuel guide

Why fuel costs what it does, and how to spend less on it.

What goes into the price at the pump

  • Crude oil: the world price of the raw material.
  • Refining: turning crude into petrol and diesel.
  • Tax and duty: often the largest part, and very different between countries.
  • Transport and retail: shipping, storage and the station's margin.
  • Your currency: oil is priced in dollars, so a weaker currency makes fuel cost more.
  • Government rules: some countries set the price or subsidise it, so it may not follow the world price.

What moves the oil price

  • OPEC+ decisions: big producers agree how much to pump.
  • Wars and sanctions: trouble in producing regions can cut supply.
  • The world economy: growth lifts demand, and a slowdown lowers it.
  • US stockpiles: weekly figures show whether supply is building up.
  • The US dollar: a stronger dollar often weighs on oil.

Spend less on fuel

  • Keep your tyres at the right pressure.
  • Drive smoothly, and avoid hard braking and fast starts.
  • Take unneeded weight out of the car.
  • Combine short trips, because a cold engine uses more fuel.

Brent or WTI?

Both are benchmark crude oil prices. Brent comes from the North Sea and is the main reference for much of the world, including Asia, Africa and Europe. WTI comes from the US and is the main US reference. They usually move together, a few dollars apart.

Common questions

What is the petrol price today?
This page doesn't show pump prices, because we don't have a reliable source for them in every country. Check your fuel station or the official announcement in your country. Enter it in the calculator above to work out your fuel costs.
How much is a barrel of oil today?
Brent crude is about $93.94 a barrel. That works out at about 0.59 USD a litre, for crude oil before it is refined or taxed.
Why doesn't the pump price change when oil does?
Fuel in the tanks was bought earlier, taxes don't move with oil, and in many countries the government or a state company sets the price, often once a month. So pump prices can lag behind the world price, or not follow it at all.
What does wholesale mean here?
It is the trading price of petrol (gasoline) and diesel on the US futures market, converted to your currency per litre. It leaves out tax, local transport and the station's margin. It is useful for seeing the direction of fuel costs, not for knowing what you will pay.
How often do these prices update?
Every few minutes while the futures market is open, from Sunday evening to Friday evening, New York time. At weekends they stay at the last price.
